Ethereal Expanse
Nine systems and exactly two ways out — that shape, more than anything else, is why this region could ever be held at all. The Ethereal Expanse is the secured cradle the convoy of the Crossing settled on the far side of the dark, and it remains the safest ground in the galaxy: every station here is lawful, every belt here is the gentlest kind, and both gates leading out of it are watched.

A Region With Two Doors
You do not defend nine systems by holding nine borders. You hold two. Phoenix Terminus leads out toward raider country; Dark Matter Reach leads out toward an order that was never hostile at all. Both are garrisoned, not sealed — ships pass through either one every day — but both are watched, and that watching is the entire reason the rest of the Expanse can afford to be as calm as it is.
Where the Crossing Made Landfall
This is the region the convoy reached at the end of the Crossing, and the region where arrival turned out not to mean safety: the raiders who crossed with the convoy struck at the freight lanes the fleet itself needed to survive, and hunting them across all nine systems failed to hold. What worked instead — taking and holding the two doors rather than the whole region — is its own event: the Closing of the Doors. Every gate patrol and every lawful station still standing here is that decision, still in effect.
The Safest Ground in the Galaxy
Helios Nexus, the only pulsar in the region and the only system every new commander starts in, anchors the Expanse's three lawful stations — Krakken's Halt among them, the first stop for every new contract. The belts here are the gentlest in the galaxy too: common sand at the Nexus itself, ferrite and cobaltine further out, nothing like the rarer ore that only shows up where the law stops following. That, too, traces back to the same two doors, still held.
