Nine systems and exactly two ways out — that shape, more than anything else, is why this region could ever be held at all. The Ethereal Expanse is the secured cradle the convoy of the Crossing settled on the far side of the dark, and it remains the safest ground in the galaxy: every station here is lawful, every belt here is the gentlest kind, and both gates leading out of it are watched.

Helios Nexus is the only pulsar in the galaxy and the only system every new commander starts in — the same system, doing double duty as both the safest possible beginning and the place the Nexus Protectorate still calls home. It anchors the Ethereal Expanse from the inside, at the heart of the one region that was ever fully secured.

Krakken's Halt is the first station almost every commander in the Ethereal Expanse ever docks at — sitting in Helios Nexus's fifth sector, stocked deliberately light, and doubling as the one place in the galaxy where the Wayfarer Concordat actually delivers its training contracts.

Phoenix Terminus is the hot door — the Ethereal Expanse's only gate into Crimson Sector and raider country beyond it, garrisoned since the Closing of the Doors and never sealed since. The name argues both ways at once: a phoenix promises rebirth, a terminus promises an ending, and the gate has been both, for every ship that has ever used it.

Dark Matter Reach is the cold door — the Ethereal Expanse's other gate, leading not into raider country but into the Void Dominion, an administrative order that was never at war with anyone. Garrisoned since the Closing of the Doors like its twin at Phoenix Terminus, it has never once been sealed — the gate stays open, and stays watched.

Crimson Sector is the region beyond Phoenix Terminus, the ground the Crimson Corsairs held first and most completely, once the Closing of the Doors pushed them out of the Ethereal Expanse for good. It gave the Corsairs their name. It has never fully given them up.

Void Dominion is the region beyond Dark Matter Reach, reached through the Ethereal Expanse's cold door and held by an administrative order of the same name rather than by any faction. Nothing here answers to the Nexus Protectorate, and nothing here is hostile to it either.

Dominion Yard is the fully stocked, quest-bearing station at Twilight Crossing, in the Void Dominion — the busiest record-keeping counter in the region, and the place its registrars actually work from.

Astral Consortium is the region beyond the Void Dominion, reached through a second gate rather than through the Ethereal Expanse directly — one more rival legitimacy at the edges of secured space, run by the Astral Consortium, an order with no interest in anyone's war.

Outer Periphery is the deepest region in the galaxy, and the least secure by a wide margin — the far end of a long chain of gates leading away from the Ethereal Expanse, where lawful presence effectively stops and the richest ore in the game waits for whoever is willing to work that far out.
