Gate Travel

Gate travel jumps a ship between systems and lands it next tick, one of 198 gates across the galaxy, with only two exits from the safe Ethereal Expanse.

Gate travel jumps a ship between systems and lands it next tick, one of 198 gates across the galaxy, with only two exits from the safe Ethereal Expanse.

One jump, one tick, a whole new system on the far side.

One Jump, One Tick

A gate links two systems directly. Order your ship to jump and it arrives on the very next tick, no sector-by-sector crossing, just a single step to a new part of the galaxy. The whole galaxy is threaded together by 198 of them. Autopilot can chain a jump into a longer route automatically; a single jump ordered by hand works the same way as one leg of that route.

Leaving the Expanse

The Ethereal Expanse, the only fully-secured region in the galaxy, has exactly two gates leading out of it. Crossing either one is a deliberate choice: the moment you jump, you leave the only space where no raider will ever find you. Those two doors have names and a history of their own: Phoenix Terminus, the hot door, and Dark Matter Reach, the cold door — both garrisoned by the Nexus Protectorate since the Closing of the Doors, never sealed.

By the Numbers

  • Gates — 198
  • Exits from the Expanse — 2
A gate jump resolves on the very next tick after you commit, one 5-second beat between the order and your arrival in the new system.

Everything in the Codex is part of a galaxy you can actually command.
